Original Marcos Wheels - potential problems

Registered Member Posts: 74 Thu, 19-Nov-2009 08:57	Tags : None I saw at Prescott, a few cars with the "Original" Marcos wheels (With Logo cast in) where the outer rim, strengthening ribs, and centre hub had been machined and polished. I liked them. So this week I set a half shaft and attached wheel hub in the lathe and mounted the wheel on it for machining. The first 2 wheels were OK BUT the other 3 all had severe "Wobble" when rotating. Investigation showed 2 problems as per attached sketch. 1wheel in particular had all wheel nuts tight, wobbled dramatically and probably would have gone un noticed on the car. I am not saying its a serious problem but worth checking next time you have the wheels off, if the tapered bore of the wheel is "As Cast" ie unmachined then I would have a closer inspection. I machine 3/32" off all the wheelnut tapers and machined the bores to suit the locating spigot diameter on the wheel hub.

Registered Member Posts: 857 Thu, 19-Nov-2009 22:56	It is really strange you should post this now as I am trying to track down a vibration on my Mantula. When I got it, it was awful about 80mph, which was due to a bent propshaft. With that fixed I had vibration from some old tyres, that would take a 'set' and then be balanced with the 'set' in place, and be out of balance at high speed and warm when they went truly round. Now I have new tyres (at least at the back, and as it doesn't come through the steering it isn't the front). But I still have some residual vibration, and only last night was wondering about checking the wheel centres were 'central' by turning the wheels on the car with a micrometer set against the centre bore - and obviously to check run-out at the same time. Years ago I used a Motorway tyres shop that had an adaptor to mount wheel on the bolts - but I haven't seen one of those for a while. The other issue is IRS drive shafts - but somewhere in this mess of bits there is some vibration and so help me I will find it one day !! Steve There's a lot of talk these days about green transport. Well, I am ahead of the game, I already have green transport ... British racing green.

Registered Member Posts: 28 Fri, 20-Nov-2009 01:00	I also had a slight small vibration or shimmy feeling on the front of my Mantula. The cause was wheel spacers. These were glued to the uprights with sealant. I think they must be a universal spacer because they do not line centrally to neither the rim or the upright. I changed my rims for 15 inch and the problem was gone. I will get the old rims refurbished and get the spacers permanently pinned to the rim.
