Just writing things and reading them again helps.............. I checked, and thought - yes I was sure I could hear the relay drop out as I posted yetserday - so searched behind the fuesbox, and came up with a "stand alone relay". Checked it out and it was wired to the switch and operating, but had no feed voltage. On checking I found the fuse was HR as the wiring had burnt at the back of the fuse box (self perpetuating!). I've cleaned up the wiring and resoldered the connections, and replaced the fuse, but confusion.........
The first relay (Rear Screen) has a permanent feed - and I knew this to be true as the first time I used the car, I embarrassingly flattened the battery by leaving the screen on. However, I checked for vlotage at the screen - and nothing. Hmm - operated the ignition, and there it was.
I would think that ideally the screen heaters should have permanent feeds, and the switches have ignition controlled feeds. This would save a flat battery and surely the heavier current shouldn't go through the ignition controlled circuit, otherwise why bother with the relay, it's only doing half it's job.
Also, if one screen should be permanently live, surely the front would make more sense - If you were confident on your battery capacity - I would have expected you would want the front screen clear before the rear (although I suppose it's easier to reach to clear manually). Sometimes Marcos logic does my head!
