Did the earlier cars (to 80's) use escort & cortina axles?
I assume the Mantula's use the Capri rear axle.
I have been reading some American magazines and they mention the 8.8 and 9 inch axles as being popular in kits, were these fitted to Uk cars?

Can anyone tell me a bit about rear axles?

Most of the early cars used the mk1 Capri rear axle. The build instruction specify this axle. However my 1970 3l V6 has a different axle as did a few others
namely a Salisbury 7HA axle - this is not off a Cortina and has stronger halfshafts!

How does the Salisbury axle compare to that fitted the wide bodied marcos

The wide body cars are all IRS and originally used the Ford Sierra diff with the now rare 3.14 ratio - not LSD but can be converted.
At some point Marcos changed to a Hydratrac diff - as they got a great price on them. Some cars are fitted with a Quaiffe diff and race cars appear to use BTR diffs. There are plenty of BTR diffs available from busted T.V.R's!

Is it possible they are the same? There are some that have had Mk1 Capri (3.09:1) reto fitted but these are a little too wide and put the wheels slightly outside the bodywork. Mantulas specified the Mk2 2.8 injection Capri axle. |

The original build manua l(pre 71) suggests using a Mk2 Cortina axle or Mk 1 3l Capri axle. Only the Mk 2 Capri axle is too wide 57in vs 54 in
