Registered Member Posts: 164 Tue, 22-Sep-2009 18:34	Tags : None Hi, Just put my chassis back on it's wheels (only took 18 months!) and note that the front wheels have a quite distinct toe out despite the tie rods ends being fully screwed into the rack as per the photo's and are slightly confused as to why ?. I bought standard GT6 tie rod ends and have already thrown the old ones away to make any comparision. My only thought at present is that they may be slightly longer than the old ones and therefore effectlvely making the rack longer causing the toe out or i have bought the wrong ones (triumph GT6 for a Mantula). If anybody is in the garage tonight with a tape measure handy could they please measure the overall length of the tie rod ends so i can compare, Regards, Martyn

Registered Member Posts: 776 Tue, 22-Sep-2009 19:45	Have just gone to the garage. Mine measure about 98mm the way you measured them, with only one thread free on the rack end. You want to borrow a threading die ? However the photo you show look a little odd. Why is there a bright part, and the part nearer the nut appears to have a fast spiral - it doesn't have tape on it does it ? And where did you get the sexy front suspension arms from ? I would like some tube arms. Steve There's a lot of talk these days about green transport. Well, I am ahead of the game, I already have green transport ... British racing green.

Registered Member Posts: 165 Tue, 22-Sep-2009 20:11	Hi Steve, Thanks for the quick reply, seems the tie rod ends are the same length which is reassuring that i have the correct part fitted but confuses me more now as to why i have this toe out ? The bright part is simply where the paint come off when i held it with pliers to help turn it fully into the thread, will soon paint up again. I do have a tap and die set but as i am replacing like for like i should not need to cut more thread and not sure what you mean by "fast spiral" .There is not tape on there and the rod end is defiantly all the way in. Re the suspension it's is looking good now it's been chromed and is the original from when the car was built, Martyn........

Registered Member Posts: 166 Tue, 22-Sep-2009 20:29	Possibly just had a Eureka moment when i poured me a glass of "John Smiths" The tubular arms Steve mentions are located to the chassis by rose joints which screw into the tubular ends. Perhaps i need to look at how much i have screwed the 4 rose joints each side into the tubular arms as this will affect how wide the front wheels sit, if they sit wider this will give me more adjustment on the steering rack, will have a look tomorrow. All the suspension i have fitted is loose at present and was not planning on getting it adjusted and tightened up until it carries all its weight, Regards, Martyn......

Registered Member Posts: 777 Tue, 22-Sep-2009 21:15	Rose jointed fronts ! I have a rose jointed rear IRS, but standard Triumph fronts. I actually have 14 rear rose joints, but no adjustment at the front !!! This is not sensible ! I have been wondering if I can find some ready made tubular fronts with a bit of adjustment - obviously my instincts are right, and your car shows what they would look like. But, yes, it gives you a lot of adjustment - not just angles - but even spacing the wheels out. I still see a suspicious looking spiral line between the bald part on your steering rack and the lock-nut in your photo. That is what I was commenting on - it might just be a trick of the light. I did have the old ones to compare, and the new ones were slightly longer, I was actually going to grind the end (as there was spare thread left in the track rod end), and I didn't have a suitable die - but managed to get the tracking right just on the "ends" of the threads - very little further adjustment available! So the situation is probably "normal" Cheers StevieC

Registered Member Posts: 167 Wed, 23-Sep-2009 16:22	Hi Guys, Thanks for the replies, finished work early so have just removed and refitted the front suspension making the front wheels sit a little wider by adjustment of the rose joints and being carefull not losing too much thread in the suspension arms for safety reasons. Having refitted it i can see that it has almost cured the problem and there is only now a very slight toe-out showing and have come to the conclusion that the track rod ends are very slightly longer as steviec suggests or the nuts i am using are slightly wider taking up more of the end thread, I can always cut a 1/4 inch more thread to give me more movement. Nixfix, thanks for the comments, it is coming along lovely albeit slowly with not too much spare cash spare at present and determined not to go into debt for the rebuild, Regards, Martyn........
