Registered Member Posts: 157 Tue, 8-Sep-2009 11:55	Tags : None Hi, Are cleaning up the steering column and the two male rod ends that secure it to the chassis are rusty and need replacing. the sizes are 1/2" right hand male thread and the bore inner size where the column passes through is a most unusual 9/16". Looked through some catalogues and none listed in 9/16, have spoken to Demon Tweeks who say no such size, turns out they are specially made in this size for MHS but £35+vat each and I need two OUCH ! Anybody else replaced these recently ? Regards, Martyn.....

Registered Member Posts: 5 Tue, 8-Sep-2009 13:14	Autosport bearings do not list this size, and they carry most sizes of Aurora, National & NMB so it must be a bit special. I'ts not shimmed is it ? Ian

Registered Member Posts: 755 Tue, 8-Sep-2009 20:13	I don't think of these as rod ends, I think they are known as Rose joints in the UK (made by Rose Bearings during the war), and Heim joints in the US (likewise - but H.G Heim Company). Try searching on Heim joints - you may come up with a supplier in the US - and let us know, as I didn't realise it was a problem size until you raised it.. BTW it would be damned hard to ream one out - it would just go round and round with the reamer ! Steve There's a lot of talk these days about green transport. Well, I am ahead of the game, I already have green transport ... British racing green.

Registered Member Posts: 128 Wed, 9-Sep-2009 19:31	Changed mine earlier this year, bought pair right size on Ebay, originally used on Westland Wasp! Still had to cut the thread a little longer and grind away some of the bearing to get them to fit into the space available. I'll try and obtain some more. There's still some play in the column as the shaft has worn where it locates in the bearing, I'll probably pack out with a dab of epoxy for the next MOT.

Registered Member Posts: 129 Thu, 10-Sep-2009 18:56	The supplier on Ebay can supply at £10 each + postage but they will probably need the threads cutting a little and grinding to size. The original bearings fitted by Marcos would have been 1/2 inch thread and 1/2 inch bore but the material would be mild steel and not hardened so could be bored out to 9/16 inch
