Does any body have any recommendations of whats the most suitable ratios for the gearbox and rear axle on a 1970 steel chassis V6?
My car is currently fitted with the original cortina axle that has a 3.77 ratio along with the 4spd gearbox with OD that has the following ratios
1st=3.163, 2nd=2.214, 3rd= 1.412, 4th=1, 4th+OD=0.82
Having looked at the different gearboxes available there doesn't seem much advantage of fitting a 5spd gearbox as it won't really improve the ratios the only advantage is a stronger more reliable gearbox.
In my opinion the best way to improve the drive ratio is to change the rear differential. The easiest change is to fit a 3.54 differential for the english axle (expensive and quite rare).
The other option is to fit a Atlas axle available ratios are 3.09, 3.22, 3.44 and 3.75 this would be stronger. However it would have to have the mounting brackets fitted, made narrower so it looks ok as i don't want to widen my rear wheel arches.
Before going down either of these routes I wanted to know what ratios other owners have fitted and if anyone has an opinion of whats best?
Thanks,
Adrian
