Registered Member Posts: 148 Tue, 11-Aug-2009 11:30	Tags : None Hi, With my Mantula about to sit on it's wheels for the first time in 2 years the first job I have to do is to plumb in the braking system. Nick the previous owner kindly gave me a fresh long roll of 3/16 copper brake pipe which I assume is the correct size. As I have only ever fitted precut lengths of brake pipes on previous projects I will have to cut them to length and purchase a pipe flaring tool. Registered Member Posts: 1370 Tue, 11-Aug-2009 16:41 Chief mechanic	is it copper pipe, or copper brake pipe ? it's not that hard to do, but some proper pliers to bend it with is a boon. the flaring bit is easy, but a bit fiddly with the cheaper tool, when I did it I made up one end then fitted it to the car and worked along, then removed it to make up the other end simples!

Registered Member Posts: 4 Wed, 12-Aug-2009 13:04	as above and try to get a cutter with a wheel as opposed to a hack saw i think car builder solutions do one remember to put the fitting on before doing the flair and make sure its the right way round i would also recomend useing brass fittings and dont try to make the bends to tight or u will kink the pipe i prefer cunifer pipe over copper but if you got it any way you might as well use it you can also get a small hand held pipe bender depends how much you want to spend really

Registered Member Posts: 54 Wed, 12-Aug-2009 13:22	I use a mini pipe cutter I bought from B&Q when I fitted a kitchen. It still leaves a small burr on the inside which I prefer to remove, a Stanley type knife is usually OK for that. I only have the cheapest flaring tool http://www.sealeyonline.co.uk/ak505-pipe-flaring-kit-9pc.html which does the job but if you are doing the whole car it might be worth getting something a little better. I also tend to do it as martineztop describes

Just about to make some pipes up and are practicing making some flares on the pipes and note that the old pipes i have removed appear to have two different types of flare at each end. At one end of the tube where the male end fitting is a double flare of which there are plenty of examples on the www however at the female end fitting there appears to be what i can only describe as a single type flare in a "Y" shape. I can't find any examples of these single flares and wondered if the double flare will be okay at the female end of the pipe or should i try the single flare ? Hope that makes sense ? Martyn.........

Registered Member Posts: 1394 Thu, 3-Sep-2009 21:40 Chief mechanic	it's been a long time, but I think that to make one type of fitting you had to flair it one way first then the other, if that make sense, but my memory isn't what it was

Registered Member Posts: 50 Fri, 4-Sep-2009 18:46	Hi Martyn Just done my pipes on the V6 and used the double flare on all joints, when fully tightened and removed for inspection the contact area looked perfect and there were a few threads left to go. I found that if I used a Y then I was VERY close to becoming threadbound on the fittings before fully tight.

As you can see on the right side (female end) the pipe has a different type of flare to the male side on the left. What i really need to know is can i do a double flare on the female side as well, will it seal it ? or should i try to copy the flare on the right as it is, i haven't seen any examples of this type on the websites i have looked at so are slightly confused, Regards, Martyn.........

Registered Member Posts: 52 Sun, 6-Sep-2009 08:16	Hi Martyn By chance my wifes Merc failed the MOT yesterday with corroded brake pipes and they had both male - female fittings as you describe. I replaced them with 3/16" copper and used the double flare on both. Perfect result and repassed test.
