Advice/help needed - vibration from rear of car? |
Lead | ||
|
Hi can anyone give us advice on how to find the source of a vibration coming from the rear of the car? I thought it was the prop shaft but two new bearings
hasn't fixed it. Tomorrow I was planning to see if I can find a garage that can re-balance my rear wheels by clamping them on the wheel studs. If that
doesn't fix it I'm not sure what to try next. Any advice is welcome as I'm running out of time to fix it.

Have you fitted new tyres, if it's been standing for some considerable time without moving the tyre's may be slightly out of shape causing the
vibration, just a thought ?
Martyn..... P.S. likewise if you are there without car you can stand with me in the drooling section !!! |

Should have mentioned brand new tyres fitted about 4 weeks ago. Only I don't think they balanced the wheels on the bolt holes and I've seen it
mentioned that the center of the wheel might not be actually be the centre of the wheel if you have original Marcos alloys. I'm hoping if I can find some
one to re balance the wheels the problem will be fixed but If not I'm running out of time and ideas.
Thanks, Adrian |

I would have said tyres first - as I had problems - plenty of tread but old carcasses - and they took a deflection, then were balanced with the deflection in
them, and then were out of balance when I had warmed them up. I also had prop shaft problems and that was a higher frequency vibration - it wasn't the
bearings - the damned thing was bent. Someone must have used a jack on it, or let it down onto it. That only cut in at 75mph, and by 85 mph your vision was
blurred and your fillings dropping out.
I have once had wheels balanced on the stud holes - there is such a thing as a 4 bolt expanding adaptor plate (and probably 5 bolt) - but I haven't seen one for years. These were Cosmic alloys on a Rover P6 - it turns out the main problem was that one had a lateral wobble - which is why they had trouble balancing it - I thought it was because the centre hole could be out. I suppose you can check your centre hole with a dial gauge or scribe, by turning the wheel on the car with it on axle stands and see if you can spot any run-out. That would also give you the chance to look and see if you have a dodgy tyre - e.g. a bulge or summat else. Maybe one of your new tyres is defective - it can happen - but I think its pretty rare. There's a lot of talk these days about green transport. Well, I am ahead of the game, I already have green transport ... British racing green.

A friend of mine has just had to replace all four wheels as they were all slightly bent, she has not long had the car and like you had a vibration it turned out
that the original marcos wheels on that model were a soft alloy and so prone to bend if you were unlucky, her car is a Mantaray.Hope that helps

Turns out to be the wheels, after spending most of the day I finally found somewhere in Norwich that could balance the wheels www.sca-racerally.co.uk To truly fix
the problem I should really replace the original Marcos alloys but the car just didn't look right on a set of mini-lite rims I originally had as the wheel
offset was wrong.
There is still quite a bit of noise coming from the rear of the car so I might still have a wheel bearing that is about to fail but at least the vibration has gone. Plan to take the car to the rally this weekend (will be taking it steady as I'm still running the engine in). Will also be at Curborough but as a spectator only. Adrian |

Looks a good place - don't forget to put them in the recommendations section if you think they are worth it. Did you get them balanced on the stud holes,
or just better balanced ?
I come over to Norwich from time to time in the Marcos - my mother lives just a few miles from Hethel, and apart from hunting little Lotuses, it is a nice run from Chester. I'll be over there again in a few weeks when she moves to Wymondham. Steve
