Registered Member Posts: 641 Tue, 30-Jun-2009 20:44	Tags : None While looking to find out if Barry's old car was racing this year (see separate thread), it struck me it is pretty tricky to find out who will be racing in our anniversary year - it looks like the very last incarnation of the Mantis racers is all we have info on. But there are lots of cars being raced in classic classes, and clubs changing rules and people changing class to match, and its quite a merry dance. So if anyone knows of anyone who has raced or will be racing this year, HSCC, Goodwood Revival, classic god knows, Britcar, supporting races, anywhere - then let us know so we can wave a flag if we are in the area. It seems to me the cars have to be the very latest, or the very oldest, to be allowed on the track - but surely there must be some inbetween classes ? And who knows, a few more gentleman racers might be tempted - especially if we can work out what the various options are - because to me it is a real mystery (what the devil is the cloth cap pre-66 class?). No Marcos in the British GTs, FIA GT, GT3, GT4 FIA GT90s or the ELMS. Topcats race 2 Mantis (LS7 engined) in the Britcar EERC Championship. ISL Motorsport should also be in the same championship when their car is rebuilt. Team Tiger & Chesterton Holdings (both LS7 engined Mantis) should both be in the Silverstone 6 hour. Cor Euser in the Dutch Super Car in the LM600. Registered Member Posts: 654 Sun, 5-Jul-2009 00:01	I must admit I am a little disappointed with the lack of response., but I have managed to find some results on the HSCC site (they are hidden under 'calendar') - and not under Results. On 5th April 2009 Barry Sewell was placed 15th (2nd in class B1) in his Marcos GT (No 28), in the Historic Roadsports race Bill Smith was 12th in his Marcos 1600GT (No 87), and Brian Arculus did a couple of laps in qualifying but is not in the race results. On 19th April 2009, Bill Smith was out at Cadwell in No 87, bagging 9th in the Historic Roadsports race. At Silverstone on 9th-10th May there were two Marcos cars in the Guard Trophy race. Both 1800GTs, one under Smith/Evans (No 67), and the other Peter Thompson (No 65). Looks like neither made the distance. On 30-31st May 2009 at Snetterton Brian Arculus was out in practice and got 7th best time - but no sign in the race results. So it looks like we have so far seen three or four Marcos cars in HSCC races - though I think we saw 6 last year. So more may have emerged - it takes the HSCC a while to document all the results - but they are very comprehensive when they appear. There's a lot of talk these days about green transport. As for the older cars racing, I have found a bundle more, as I have just spotted the Classic Sports Car Club results pages (Gary - had just discovered the common timing company as the best route to do this - good advice). From this we can add a few more Marcos racers to the list : At Snetterton in April there were no less than 4 Marcos cars racing in the CSCC swinging sixties race, 40 minute race with driver change or single driver Mike Wroe in an 1800GT (also raced in Sports Car V saloon race) Tice/Conoley (Allen Tice) raced an 1800GT and came in 6th overall and first in class C. Edwards/Todd had a 3 litre GT in the same race (the 3 litres are class D and up against reliants, TR5s, MGC, etc) Daniels/Gough also had a 3 litre out there. The Daniels/Gough 3 litre was out again at Anglesey on April 18th/19th, and got 6th (and 2nd in class) In May at Brands, Mike Wroe was racing again and we also have Andy Webb in a 3000GT who qualified well, but got a DNF In May at Mallory the Gough/Daniels team got the 3000GT to 4th. Most recently at Oulton Park, Mike Wroe got a 3rd, and Gough/Daniels were out there but got a DNF. So I think that are three 3000GTs and two 1800GTs racing in this class so far - and 4 more 1800 or 1600 cars in the HSCC races. Presumably the Swinging Sixties class includes the steel chassis cars, and I note in the regs that cars from the 1970s, but in the spirit of the 60s cars may be admitted. So I would say any Marcos from the first incarnation of the company should be eligible. Which really opens things up compared to the pre-65 class. Steve Thanks for visiting our website Steve. Indeed, as I explain on my profile page HRT has nothing to do with hormone Replacement Therapy. The Website contains: - the team members: driver, guest drivers and mechanics - racewagen: the racecar starting at the bottom in 2003 with the self build BMW Compact (+ developments) and working the way up with receiving the Marcos Mantis in november 2007, totaly rebuilding it and the first try out in januari 2008. - evenementen: events (races, shows, etc) - sponsors - photo's - media - verslagen: reports - contact - gastenboek: visitors page The You-Tube links and pictures, I post them regularly on here. Registered Member Posts: 663 Wed, 8-Jul-2009 23:06	You may not see much traffic in the racing section of the forum, but this weekend a load of guys will go down to Curborough to have one car runs on what is only a 900m track - and as you see from my note - there are classic racers now of Marcos 1600, 1800 (volvo) and 3000 V6 cars. I think there is more racing (and more chance for racing) than many people think. Have fun out there with the Batmobile - and if you will keep it black (I hope) then my Rolling Stones favourite track is "Paint it Black" - it could be your theme tune - Rock And Roll !!!! Please excuse me copying your photo ..but it looks so good... You don't want to swap if for my matt black Ducati? Only joking - I really want both - as they match ! At my age its ideal Motorsport since you are on the track on your own and everything is in your own hands. See www.hillclimbandsprint.co.uk I am at present renovating a 1969 GT V6 to use next year but like most Motorsport run by the MSA, the class structure's is under review, we are planning to run a Pre 1972 Classic Class so it opens up to lots of cars. I did visit Bill Smith earlier this year, he uses the computer once or twice a year so probably hasnt seen the topic

He was one of three cars timed under the minute for the two laps, and just look at what he was up against, and he did it consistently and tidily (unlike some slower drivers - ahem). There are quite a few rules regarding helmet types, sound levels, car setup, scrutineering, etc. You may find that Curborough has wetted a few appetites - but if anything I would say the next logical step is to try and get yourself into an official sprint or hillclimb. At least that way there is only one looney out there at a time! I was going to sign up for Prescott until I heard it wasn't to be timed, but for those interested in taking the next step it could be interesting. I was racing at Curborough - I was racing myself, and on my first time on a track I was overwhelmed with all the decisions to be made. Where to brake, whether to change gear, what line to take, whether to use the kerbs. It has given me a new appreciation for race drivers - it is so intense... and I want more. I would be there next weekend to do it again if I had half a chance - but preferably after I have made half a dozen changes to the car - none of which even looked like shortcomings until it hit the track (except for the weak brakes which my postings here will verify that I have thought were awful since I got it - they are still awful, but at least they don't fade). So now I appreciate the racers more - and I hope some of them are up near Oulton Park soon, so I can wave them on. I think I have glimpsed what you guys are up to, and why you do it. Registered Member Posts: 33 Wed, 15-Jul-2009 17:42	Hi OldNoccer & Bmarti I am pleased Curborough wetted your appetite, you wait till you have tried Prescott, Shelsley Walsh, Harewood and other Hillclimbs. You will be really hooked on the Sport. Its you against the clock, plus your wallet. Old Noccer, your description of the track decisions to be made is perfect - this is what Speed Hillclimbing is all about, we learn every weekend. I can manage about 52 seconds for the 2 lap Curborough in my 600cc single seater, a Lotus Elise will do about 60 sec and a Hillman Imp about 70 secs. Since I am 65 YO, I am slowing down to use the Marcos V6. Seriously, if sufficient interested I am sure the HSA will consider a "Marcos" class in their Championship, choice of 24 events per year around the UK. We run a specific Mazda MX5 Class at present with 7 competitors. May I say that a "Weekend" Hillclimb event is a great social gathering as well.

I spent many years racing on one of the Thames Sailing barges - there was keen racing, and needle, and hairy moments (65 tons - no brakes). When I was young I used to do trials riding and the odd enduro, there were no spectators except the ones you brought (before anyone dreamed of these arena shows). We get to see hill-climbing a bit now on TV - so I hope it isn't spoiled as I think it is one of the survivors (and I think I could add to that grasstrack bikes, and autograss cars). But as regards a Marcos hillclimb class - I doubt sufficient of us can dedicate the time or risk our precious machinery on such a venture. However, Prescott may sow the seed, and if nothing else maybe we could have a run to a real hillclimb event as spectators just to have a look-see. And you have done 52 seconds round Curborough in a 600cc - J****! Polite words escape me ! I have a mental picture of Richard Patridge in 500bhp Mantis GT being left dead by a 600cc car. I was amazed by the speed of Bill Smith's 1600 at 59s, so it looks like the smaller the engine the faster !! You don't know the times for an Ariel Atom do you (I want a go in one - anyone?).
