My car has just had a service locally by a specialist classic/sports car garage (huge mistake!). They have reported that the engine core plugs are corroded as
they are so close to the road and the elements. Is this something that should concern me, i.e should I try and get them replaced or is it normal and nothing to
worry about?

Was quoted £600 by MHS as the exhaust needs dropping off and engine lifting out! As I've just been caned by a local garage for a service and MOT I guess
I'll be playing Russian roulette for a while until I can afford to get it done.

I have not heard of them rotting through in a V8 in normal use (which includes bog-hopping Land Rovers). They shouldn't be rotting from the inside due to
the corrosion inhibitors in your anti-freeze (which you need to keep in all year round). They are there in case your engine freezes, to pop out and save the
block from cracking (in theory).
I would use it as an excuse to start thinking about the next super-tuned big bore engine, so in the unlikely event that you get a core plug leak, you could use it as an excuse for a new engine ! After all, if you are paying all that money to get the engine out and back in, well ...who knows what else might need replacing in that old engine ! Next thing you will be hoping for a core plug leak - but I doubt you will get one. Steve

Thanks Old Noc, that was the answer I was hoping for actually. I'm quite happy with my engine thanks. Hopefully there is enough plug left on the outside to
serve me in that case.
I've offset my carbon footprint....I've moved all thought of it to the right a bit. |
