Firstly then, username has nothing to do with Hendrix. I am plenty old enough but was never really a fan. It is purely car inspired.
In 1988 I took delivery of a brand new, factory built, Mantula spyder E952 DGS and had a lot of fun with it here and on the continent for about ten years. I sold it when I changed career and started a new busines. You have probably seen it at events and on the Club stand at the NEC. It is finished in "moonstone" like the Sierra Cosworths of the time.
The first time I saw it at the NEC really hurt and I knew I would have to have another.
After several visits to Redline I hadn't really connected with any of the stock, and I wasn't strongly commited to any model. Then, "coming soon" was Q361 NYB. It was the cheapest Mantula on offer at the time, interesting technically, but what a sight! Paint is light metallic purple which, although I would never have chosen, nobody seems to dislike. The interior though, red and blue vinyl! I'm really sorry if you are out there but what were you on? Something from the Hendrix era ? I bought the car thinking I would run it for a year and then start a phased rebuild.
I started stripping it down on 1 Oct 2007. While the chassis was away I started cleaning and painting bits and pieces and, yes you guessed it, I couldn't bear to put it back together until everything had been cleaned / painted / replaced. So it is now a one hit full rebuild and has not been on the road this summer. Current state is I have a new leather interior trim from MHS ready to fit and the car goes to MHS for respray in December. Things are looking good for next Spring. Oh yes, I am planning to build a new dash with revised instrumentation that means a lot of work on the spaghetti and electrics is not my best subject! So fingers crossed for next Spring.
Much to my surprise I am going to retain the body colour. When I test fitted the new dash top the new leather looked just right with it. So purplehaze it will remain.
