Can anyone provide guidance in respect of the essex engine?

I need a replacement engine, but need to know how to spot and avoid the early Zodiac engine (with the oil pressure problem)?

Do engine numbers identify them?

Is it possible and easy to replace the essex with the cologne, or should that be avoided?

Thanks cranniev6

did you hear it running ? I'd fit it and fire it up if you can, or if you like getting your hands dirty pull the heads off and have a look at the bores, if
they're not scored or badly worn a re-build could be quite simple, you can fit new rings and bearings and replace the seals, then check over the heads,
renew the valve seals and de-coke and grind in the valves, you may need to check out the rockers for wear too, but if you're lucky you can recon for around
the £100 mark and have a sweetly running lump with no leaks or smoke. all depends really on how good it is to start with.
There's an article on the web somewhere on re-building the essex
here's something from Mark Saxby's site

Essex engines are pretty plentiful and easy to rebuild/repair, lots of info available and plenty of spares and tuning parts too, you can change to the later
cologne engine but to be honest there's little to be gained unless you want fuel injection as there's little power or weight difference and the older
Essex has more torque.
Someone here will no doubt give you more advise re engine numbers, but I would recommend you consider saving for a 5 speed bellhousing and fit a 5 speed Type 9
from a V6 ford, this has better gearing and loses the overdrive (unless you want to keep it that is).
Welcome to the fold mate
